One of the important things to the creative director of the series was that we show real family situations for the kids. A lot of kids have single parents and a lot of those parents struggle with depression. Rita's mom is one of these single parents which means sometimes Rita has to be a support system for her mom. It's a difficult ask for any kid but Rita has an abundance of pep and always tries her best to cheer up her mom whenever she sees her feeling a little down. A family is a family no matter how small and we hope other kids out there in the real world connect with Rita and her mom.
